Hi everyone. I had root scaling done last Monday on 1 half of my mouth. The hygenist accidentally knocked out a filling....Now I'm nervous about the getting the second half done. I have 4 fillings on that side. I'm scheduled to go in tomorrow, but now I'm nervous. I know I HAVE to..and I am...I was just wondering how often this happens? Was it just a fluke? Thanks to anyone who can help!!!
How often do fillings fall out during root scaling?
Usually fillings don't fall out during a scaling or root planning, but when they do, its because they are loose, had micro-leakage or undermined with decay. In most cases they are old fillings that have been leaking causing decay to develop under the restoration. A good restoration won't fall or be scraped out, they must be drilled out. Don't be worried about continuing with your next appointment, it shouldn't happen again.
Reply:If a filling comes out that easily then it was on its way to falling out. Count it as a blessing in disquise. Fillings don't last forever. They do need to be replaced in due time.
Reply:not a fluke:) sometimes if a filling has been "leaking" awhile then scaling(either hand or electric) will dislodge it. which means it needed to be replaced anyway.
Reply:Very rarely, I have done over 1000 scalings and never pulled out a single filling but again I know people that have. I have pulled out a filling before just doing a simple cleaning. There are many reasons why fillings will come off...too old, overhanging margins of the filling, or it could have been just an accident. Most likely you will be fine.

Can mercury in fillings cause ms?
I have ms and I have had suggested to me that amalgam fillings may have a relationship, can you elaborate?
Can mercury in fillings cause ms?
Yes. It is a contributory factor. Don't listen to the people telling you mercury in your amalgam fillings is not enough to hurt you. Go the the following web site hosted by the University of Calgary School of Medicine and watch the 5 minute video of brain tissue Tubulon Matrix that surrounds neurodendrites being destroyed by mercuric ions. The over 50% content of liquid mercury used in amalgam fillings is released in the form of mercury vapor. This vapor is swallowed and goes to the liver where it is converted into mercuric ions. Notice what the video says about mercuric ions being introduced into brain tissue. Now realize that the amount of mercury used in that experiment was 100 to 1,000 times less than what you get from amalgam fillings when you drink a hot liquid or just brush your teeth! In addition it is now known that the amount of mercury vapor leaving the amalgam fillings that are near a crown of a dissimilar metal like gold, will emit 80 times the amount of mercury vapor!
It is also know by biological dentists that removing amalgam fillings can give heavy metal mercury poisoning to people and many cases have shown where rashes on the hands and other parts of the body erupt after removing fillings improperly. Furthermore, ALL amalgam fillings have infections lying under them between the interstitial space between the tooth and the amalgam because amalgam does not bond to the tooth! To even suggest otherwise is irresponsible and the ADA is refusing to acknowledge what most dentist know and that is that the amalgam fillings are causing huge numbers of diseases in this country and that the position ADA is taking is wrong and one day will have to face the very costly legal battle that is insuing.
MS is labeled by medical community as an "autoimmune" disease (when the body is supposedly attacking itself). However, recent research shows that MS as well as other autoimmune diseases are really linked to infections, especially viral. Key focal sits are often the brain and nervous system.
In addition, the heavy metal link due to mercury has been proven, especially undiagnosed infected teeth.
I would suggest people that do not believe the mercury in teeth due to amalgams is not the type of mercury that can be absorbed in the body, "free themselves from the lies they believe!" I would strongly suggest looking at the companies that funded those so called "scientific studies" and look at their motivations, including financial and personal gains afforded them for doing the study before making statements that mercury is not a problem when used in amalgams.
good luck to you

WebMD Medical NewsDec. 9, 2004 -- Mercury in dental fillings does not cause Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis, or other health problems, according to a new review of all current research.
But will this put to rest the concerns many people have?
It's a sensitive issue. Methyl mercury is the type found in fish, and has been found harmful to the brain in large amounts. The EPA advises women to avoid eating mercury-rich fish during pregnancy for that reason.
However, mercury in dental fillings is a different type of chemical compound -- an amalgam or blend of copper, silver, and mercury. Dentists have used this blended metal for more than 150 years. But over the years, concerns about mercury fillings have been raised, writes Meryl Karol, PhD, an epidemiologist with the University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health.
Karol chaired the expert panel whose research review was released today. Scientists from the National Institutes of Health's National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, the Center for Devices and Radiological Health of the FDA, the CDC, and the Public Health Service's chief dental officer, were among those experts.

Onlymatch4U above believes he is on a crusade to save us from the evils of amalgam. However, there is no sound evidence despite many studies that correlate the mercury released from amalgam with MS, or any other disease for that matter, except for very, very rare allergies to amalgam. Just because some universities are on the same crusade doesn't mean their studies are well performed, relevant, or useful. There are good university departments and bad university departments.
On a basic level, we are all living longer and better than ever before, and life expectancy continues to improve apart from the looming impact of obesity in modern societies. Amalgam was introduced in about the 1850s and it is estimated that currently over 2 billion are placed each year worldwide.
On a technical point, it is totally incorrect to say that there is infection under all amalgams because they do not bond to teeth:
1. Amalgam doesn't have to bond to be so successful, and that's part of the beauty of the material. They can last you a lifetime. As mentioned in the FDA publication, the silver in the amalgam corrodes microscopically and actually makes it a self-sealing material.
2. Composite is more difficult to place and not as strong. To be successful it MUST bond because when it is set with the blue light, it shrinks slightly. Therefore it has to be placed in small amounts at a time to reduce this shrinkage. It can therefore lift off the surface of the tooth and leak, especially when the margin is only in the dentine layer. If you search Yahoo Answers, you will find a lot of instances of people complaining about sensitivity after composites because of this problem. Composites are getting better, but still not up there with amalgams for durability or ease of use.
Strangely, onlymatch4u says later in his tirade that MS is an autoimmune disease which means that amalgam is not involved. Can't have it both ways. And needs to study immunology - I'd suggest "Immunology" by Goldsby and Kindt. I've read it 4 times cover-to-cover.
I'm very sorry to hear you have this disease - I had a friend once with MS, and I sometimes perversely wish that these amalgam scares were true, and that we could cure all the ills of the world with a replacement. Best wishes.

I have dental fillings that contain mercury and I heard...?
I heard dental fillings with mercury in them can cause birth defects and other things...
Is there a chance that when I have kids, they will have birth defects. How true is this? Should I be worried? I'm really paranoid and would like to know that my future children will come out all right.
I have dental fillings that contain mercury and I heard...?
Mercury in Dental Fillings -
Some dental fillings contain mercury. In 1997, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration reviewed nearly 60 studies about mercury exposure and dental fillings. The FDA concluded that the health risk was low and that there was no reason to change dental practice. The World Health Organization agrees with this assessment. Meanwhile, dentists have begun using materials that do not contain mercury. Research on dental fillings continues.
The governments of Canada, Germany and New Zealand recommend that pregnant women avoid dental fillings that contain mercury.
Unless mercury fillings are broken or damaged, they should not be removed since removal may release mercury.
If you have concerns about dental fillings, speak to your dentist.
Reply:never herd about that if ur soo worried get em takin out
Reply:Seriously? You don't know what a hazard mercury poses to the human body?
It can cause waaaaay more problems than birth defects.
Do a little research sweetheart.
Heavy metals like Mercury are virtually impossible to remove from the human body, and can cause serious mental problems.
People who were "Mad Hatters" years ago, we're called so because the Mercury they preserved their hats in turned them batsh*t crazy.
Reply:They contain mercury and it's anybodies guess what the mercury vapor does to the human body. If you have the money get gold fillings. They last a long time. I've had mine for 13 years.
Reply:Woah. Mercury fillings are reeeaaly old. If they get to your head, you can go crazy. But that only happens when mercury is exposed to our open skin, and soaks in.
Reply:hey Susie i bet you sold more girl scout cookies than anyone in your troop but this is the real world. How bout worrying about your children being drug dealers or a rapist. Stop worrying your self about dental fillings!
Reply:You (and your future kids) will be fine. That little tiny bit of mercury won't do a thing. Its not like the entire filling is 100% mercury! lol, if your THAT concered just call a dentist.
Reply:there is a small quantity of mercury in them, and it remains there anyway.
Reply:I don't see why they would use mercury, especially in your mouth. I mean there was a mercury spill at my school and they were treating it like a deadly substance, so if they did I wouldn't be worried because it's probly not alot.

since you are not just considering suicide but planning it...i am going to be brutally honest with you...however understand i am not trying to hurt you...but give you the respect of an honest answer...and you may contact me...
if you write this in a suicide note...it will go no where...and will be forgotten in a matter of days...it is not proof of a situation because no one is there to testify to it and will not be taken seriously...i am sorry to say that...
i would talk to someone...a counselor...and ask them what to do in that situation...i don't know your age or your state but i know where i live...a professional is required to report child sexual abuse even if the person is now an adult and there could be an investigation by the child welfare experts...this may give you the power which has been so violently taken from you and also give you some reason to keep going...
i am terribly sorry you have suffered so deeply that death is your only solution and i hope you can connect with someone who will help you...

3 year old/fillings/laughing gas?
We had a dentist appointment today to find out what to do about my daughters cavities. She has a couple tiny ones on her front teeth - due to breastfeeding at night when she was younger. Her dentist didn't want to do anything about them before because she was too young so we're seeing a pediatric dentist now.
Anyway - the dentist told me that we could leave them because they're so small and wait til she's older and not as likely to resist but I don't want to take a chance of them getting bigger and being more complicated to take care off so we're going back in two weeks to take care of. She'll be getting laughing gas to help her relax.
Today she was pretty good at the dentist - let her check and count all her teeth but wouldn't accept a cleaning. She clamped her mouth shut and said, "no way"
How can I get her ready for her fillings? I dont' know if she is going to cooperate. Does anyone have any experiences with young kids and laughing gas? Especially fearful kids?
Thanks

The theory on baby teeth is different than it is on adult teeth. Baby teeth will exfoliate and the permanent teeth will erupt underneath. Usually front teeth exfoliate around 6 yrs of age. If your daughter has small cavities, why not have her checked every 6 mos to see if the cavities have gotten any bigger? It may feel like you aren't doing the right thing, but believe it or not giving her a bad experience at the age of 3 may be harder to get over than letting the teeth be for right now and just watching them. As parents we do try to give our kids the best, and at 3 yrs old, it is hard to know how much they understand about what we are doing to try to help them. They may not understand and it may scare her more than it is worth. Also, you could try to get a second opinion and see if the second dentist concurs with your first DDS.
I would suggest canceling this appointment and just reschedule a cleaning again in 6 mos to see if they can determine if these cavities will stay about the same size or get larger. If you want documentation of their size, have the dentist xray the teeth and then compare xrays in 6 months. Also, ask your dentist about fluoride treatments or fluoride supplements. If your daughter ends up being cavity prone fluoride can help reduce the amount of future cavities she will get.
Reply:Laughing gas is actually really bad for the female reproductive system. Most dentists don't use it anymore, so I'm surprised your child's dentist does. It order to get her to let the dentist do his thing, you gotta make it worth her while. Bride her with something, so she'll cooperate. The gas really helps you relax, so once she gets it, she'll probably relax and be fine.
Reply:First of all, I agree w/the dentist. If its on her front teeth, she will be losing them in a matter of a couple years. Don't put her through the trauma (or what she expects to be trauma) for it. If you and her take good care of her teeth, the decay isn't going to spread too much, if at all. If it does, you can opt to have them pulled...when she is older.....if they don't fall out naturally.
I worked for a dentist and still fill in on occassion and have never heard, seen, read or been told anything about nitrous oxide (laughing gas) effecting female reproduction.
Reply:I have cleaned and worked on children as young 6 months and up alot of times you find that a general dentist wont work on small children first of all they are not equipt and not only that they are not kid friendly things are not at their level and for them . things have changed so much pediatric dentistry and the right office is and should be fun for the child to go to remember we dont use the same terminology that they usre a general office uses we use words that they understand so remember that when explaining to your child use the sleepy medicine and popcicle air we nver use the word blood we use the word red and never shot thats sleepy med so think like your child age they only hear the bad stuff and the last three words and remeber we may of had bad experience but our child doesnt have to they know if mommy or daddy is nervous so be positive . So for her treatment I would have them done first of all if they decay and dacay can spraed fast in children you dont want her to wake up one morning with a swollen face thinking I should have taken care of this and her teeth can become fragile so if she would fall or run into something her tooth could fracture at the gum line so while they are small take less trauma for her and easier treatment so she will have a more positive appointment. and its okay to give her the nitrus oxide it will just relax her andthey do give her more oxygen than nitris so she will breath full oxygen for a little bit after she is done we call it popcicle air because the children can pick flavors so she will be okay this is a good thing mom and the staff in pediatrics are trained in being with children from newborn up so she is in good hands maybe she can take her favorite movie to watch we had tv's on the ceilings for the children and children to better in the Am Appt and waiting for her teeth to wiggle out themselves can damage her permanet teeth wich is around 6 or 7

Your fillings are now due for a new fillings. The dentist need to see you as soon as you can because the reason you have pain when ever you feel it with your tounge is because it has small cavity that's starting to become big. Go to the dentist now and tell your dentist your WANT permanent fillings not the kind you have, What you have now is just temporary.
Reply:cavities? you need to go to the dentist....
you should go every 6 months
Reply:if you are experiencing sensitivity to cold then you may need a root canal.

What kind of fillings can i get on my teeth?
I've always had a sweet tooth so its no surprise to me that i have loads of cavities. I was wondering what kind of fillings i could get.
What kind of fillings can i get on my teeth?
they don't do fillings to much any more, because the old type had lead in it which cause reactions in certain people, and the newer types of fillings aren't covered by all insurances..usually they do root canals, crowns, or caps.
Reply:any kind you want and can afford to pay for
Reply:I don't know the different kinds, but the ones I've gotten are white so they match my teeth.
