Can amalgam fillings be white?

My dentist said I was getting amalgam fillings but all of my fillings are white? Can they be white? Even my insurance bill said they were amalgam. I was just wondering because I have a metallic taste in my mouth that sometimes burns my tongue and gums and throat.

Can amalgam fillings be white?
Unfortunely, no they can't be white. They are light grey when put in, and they just get darker the longer you have them. You can however have them polished, this makes them shiny for a little while. Hope that the fillings are in the molars; if not don't worry no body stares at teeth! As for the taste, this could be some of the small filling chips from the original fill date.
Reply:amalgam fillings are silver and are usually cheaper than white ones. the metal taste will go away after awhile.
Reply:When an amalgam filling is first placed the color is light silver. Over time the filling will tarnish, thus aging to a dark "black" color. If you want "white" fillings in the future ask for them. They are made from a composite resin. These will stain to a darker yellow color as they age.
