Fillings at the dentist during pregnancy?

16 weeks pregnant and needing to get fillings done on my teeth. The doctor said it's ok but just curious to know if anyone has been told otherwise and why!

Fillings at the dentist during pregnancy?
It is perfectly fine to have dental treatment during the second trimester. Elective work is usually avoided during the first trimester due to organ development of the baby, but by now the organs are formed and he/she is just getting bigger, and bigger, and bigger.

The only precaution that the dentist should take is the type of anesthetic to use. Regular lidocaine, which everyone calls novocaine, contains 1:100,000 epinephrine. This is the scientific term for adrenaline. Because of the body's response to this additive, high blood pressure and increased heart rate, epinephrine containing anesthetics should be avoided.

Every dentist will have carbocaine which contains no epinephrine and is perfectly safe for the baby.

Good Luck
Reply:I had a root canal done while I was pregnant. As long as you're in the first or second trimester, you'll be fine. I wouldn't do it any later than that.
Reply:i had mine when i was preg also. its only the x-ray they cant do hun. with fillings u have to have anasthetic, think thats the only thing anyone would be concerned about but it has no known effect on baby, as long as your adentist is aware your pregnant he/she will know whether or not to do your fillings. but i had mine whle preg and my son was fine :) ur braver than me goin for fillings tho lol
Reply:I think if they do the filling with porcelin and not amalgan (heavy metals) you'll be fine along with you're kid.
Reply:Novocaine is no problem. Stay away from Nitrous Oxide and Xanax (stress reliever).

I've heard that at pregnancy you always have problems with your teeth. The first wife seemed to prove that point.

Jodie mentioned X-Ray. They cover you with a lead blanket to protect your precious cargo. And now a days they have digital X-Ray, which uses much MUCH less power than the old type.

Don't fear the X-Ray. Just make sure your dentist takes the necessary precautions.

Good Luck with the new baby. :)
