What fillings are best for quilts and comforters?

Trying to decide between polyester fillings or cotton fillings.

To keep warm, which is better?

What fillings are best for quilts and comforters?
Personally, I prefer to use 100% cotton Warm %26amp; Natural (or Warm %26amp; White, or Warm %26amp; Black, depending on the colors in my quilt). I like a very flat quilt. Polyester can be very fluffy (high loft), and it is also very warm because as a synthetic fiber it does not breathe. You have other alternatives, however. You can get blends of cotton and polyester - one very popular blend is Hobbs 80/20 (80% cotton, 20% polyester). You can also try other natural fibers. Both wool and silk batting are available. While silk might be too expensive, wool is a great choice if you're looking for a very warm batting. Wool is also surprisingly easy to hand quilt and is machine washable.
Reply:Cotton, always use cotton. It's one of the "noble" fibers.
Reply:I have been making quilts for many years and I have tried every type of filling available.

Polyester fillings do not hold up over the years. The filling shifts and bunches no matter how closely you quilt it. I never consider buying it for anything anymore. Cotton fillings are warm and also as you wash them they become soft and pliable and eventually look like antique quilts.

Warm and Natural is a great filling as is Hobbs cotton batting. These are the two fillings I use the most at this time. Occasionally for special projects I use Hobbs Wool filling.

Happy Quilting!
Reply:poly fill for warmth %26amp; "cush"
Reply:If you're making a quilt, definitely go with cotton. Polyester shifts when you're sewing and is harder to work with where cotton "grips" the fabric and gives a much more pleasing finished product.

If you're looking to keep a quilt for a long time and simply wish to buy one, cotton is still preferable because, as it has already been pointed out, polyester will shift no matter how well it's quilted. I bought an old quilt made in some sweatshop overseas that had polyester batting and the first time the woman washed it, all the batting shifted into large random lumps throughout the quilt making it unusable. I purchased it for the fabric only.

Final word: sure, polyester is fluffy and bouncy, but you can't use it for long. If it's for a guest bed that's never used or for show only, sure, go with polyester, but if you're actually going to use it, stick with cotton!
