I think I need fillings :o(?

Hi, my name is Lucy and I'm 13 years old. My question is about fillings, I think I need to get some. I've never had any before but I was eating sweets before and one of my teeth started to hurt a lot. So I went and looked in the mirror and there is a kind of brownish bit on the tooth, I brushed my teeth and it wouldn't go away. I looked at my other teeth to and some of them look the same.

I'm really scared that I'll need to get fillings, I've never had any before, and I'm scared it will hurt. I don't like going to the dentist, and I missed my appointment last year because my mum forgot about it and I didn't want to go so I didn't remind her. I know if I tell my mum my tooth hurts she will make me go to the dentist. Is there anything I can do to fix the tooth myself? I don't want to get fillings, I'm really scared. What happens if I do need to get fillings?

Thank you.

Love Lucy.

I think I need fillings :o(?
Hi Lucy,

I put off going to a dentist too because I was so scared. But when a tooth cracked I had to go, so I looked for a dentist who specialized in treating nervous patients like you and me. So I went, and guess what? It turned out to be not bad at all!

I got to wear headphones and listen to really relaxing music. He also put cotton or a foam spongy thing to keep my mouth open and a tube that kept taking the saliva out. Then he put a numbing cream in my mouth. When he was sure it worked, he then very gently gave me some tiny shots of novocaine which didn't bother me at all. My eyes were closed, so I had to ask him if he really DID give me the shots!

Obviously he did, because when he repaired my tooth I didn't feel anything. He also kept explaining what he was doing or what I was going to hear next (drilling and grinding noises) but honestly, there was no pain. I was more worried that I would fall asleep, I was so relaxed! Afterwards, he just had me tap my teeth on a small piece of film a few times to make sure that the bite was ok (and drill a bit until it was perfect.)

And that was it!

So please tell your mom but let her know how scared you are. And best of luck!
Reply:The dentist will do x-rays, determine if you have a cavity (Which will need attention) and then he will shoot your mouth with Novacaine (a numbing agent). You will feel pressure, and yes it is a rotten experience, but if you have a major tooth ache, nothing compares to the pain you will be in if that happens. I hate dentists as much as the next guy, but sometimes you just gotta' suck it up and do what you gotta do. Be glad it is 2006 and we have Novacaine. You'll be fine. You can't fix it yourself, you need to schedule a dentist appointment as soon as possible.
Reply:You should go see the dentist as soon as possible. I was scared the last time I had to go to the dentist too, but it wasn't bad at all. You should take a cd to listen to while you are there, it helps relax you. Good luck and don't forget to floss!
Reply:Hi Lucy. I know it's scary getting your first filling, I am 24 and I had to get one done a few months ago and I was really scared too. But if your tooth hurts when you eat sweets and has a brown area on it, I'm afraid it probably is a cavity, and there's nothing you can do to fix it yourself. You really do need to see a dentist sweetheart, and he will need to do a filling. It's scary when you've never had it before, but it shouldn't hurt, so don't worry about that. I think you should go to your mum and tell her that you have a sore tooth and ask if she will make a dentist appointment for you soon. Tell her you're scared about getting a filling, and ask her if she will come with you - she can even come in the room with you if that would make you feel better. And ask her about how it feels to get a filling, I'm sure she'll have had some cavities growing up, and she'll be able to tell you what it's like. But you really do need to see a dentist, sorry sweety. Good luck, and try not to worry too much about it, it really won't hurt.
Reply:Talk to your mom about it.
Reply:It sounds to me that you do have a cavity.Don't worry about it.I hate the dentist too,but just think,it will only last for a second when they numb it,but you'll have no more pain.
