Dental Fillings, what should I expect?

I recently went to the dentist after a strike out of not going for over about 4 years. It was pretty bad, and my current state is dental restore.

I have to have fillings, pretty sure I'm getting the composite resin colored ones. (Pretty much on all my teeth I need a filling)

Most of my cavities are under the gum line and come out from it, so I guess near the roots, only one or two are actually ontop or not near the roots/gum line.

It was hard enough going for a exam and cleaning. I guess I'm phobic you could say. I'm extremely nervous and worried about my next visit which is in a week and is the fillings.

I don't know what to expect about what their going to do, I've read up on the fillings themselves and I'm pleased.

Also my teeth are highly sensitive, when I got my cleaning they did use a numbing gel, but for my cavities teeth, pain shot sharply through my tooth and seemingly to my roots.

Any advice,tips,stories would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Dental Fillings, what should I expect?
Hey don't worry they numb you up so much you don't feel a thing. Only concern you should have is after becuase you won't be able to feel you lips and stuff for a minute. I would suggest you keep a rag or paper towels because your lips will drop a lil and you maynot know when your spitting or drolling. But that's not to bad. Normally people are worried about pain and believe me you'll feel wonderful.LOL Fillings are the second least painful besides a cleaning and if you made through that you can make it through the fillings. And as far as being nervous theres nothing wrong with that just don't allow it to run your life and taking care of your dental needs I mean it's better to have a lil pain then to have no teeth at all. No offense to those who don't though.
Reply:have them gas you , I cannot see them doing more than two or three at a time though,,
Reply:well...first of all you should always go to the dentist as its important and is one of lifes chores!

second its almost painless! oh what am i talking about? deep fillings like the ONE i had was painful! the needle hurts a little but after that theres no pain....honest!
Reply:They would only do 2 or 3 at a time. They'll give you novicane, which is a little weird feeling, not exactally painfull. They'll get a drill, and take off all the baceria, so they can have a clean filling. It usually helps to try counting backwards, or try to count by 3's to get your mind off of the weird feeling from the drill. Then they'll get the filling stuff, and put it in your teeth, which you cant even tell they're doing. It doesn't take very long, about 45 minutes to an hour.
Reply:My dentist uses a sand blaster without numbing on the smaller fillings. It works really well and if I go to all my check-ups I don't need a drill at all.

You need to find a good dentist. I had a creepy dentist who did unnecessary work.
Reply:I was also a dentist deserter... I went back after about 5 yrs and had a similar situation. To be honest, it wasn't that bad. I had some cavities filled and even had a crown! Just be sure to tell your dentist that you are ultra scared/sensitive and they will take care of the rest. You may have to have a shot in your gums to numb you, but believe me, it's not as bad as you may think. I would much rather have the shot than feel them working on my teeth. My sister and a coworker of mine both get their dentist to prescribe them some valium before having a procedure. It will be over before you know it! Now, I have to admit, I go every 6 months w/out fail.... Good luck!
Reply:Dont worry I interned at an office that specializes in nervous patients, you should look into sedation dentistry. They sedate you and your in a kind of half sleep during the procedure. Only thing is you would have to come one hour before your procedure and its usually early in the morning. During the sedation they also use anesthetic so you dont feel anything.

If you dont want to do sedation dentistry you can always ask for nitrous, its safe and the effects wear off about 15 min after your done.

During your filling you wont feeling anything, maybe a little pressure but nothing painful, if you do feel anything you can tell them and they will give you more anesthetic.

There is really nothing to be worried about these are professionals that are there to help you. If you have any questions or concrens you should really talk to your dentist about them and they will do what they can to make you comfortable. Dentistry isnt as scary as you think .. its actually quite relaxing at times.
Reply:Fillings are one of the least painful procedures you can get preformed. Ask you dentist to numb you up really well. You can get 3 carpals of ladocaine. Or you can ask you dentist for an anti anxiety pill like Halicion. Take 2 pills @ 0.25mg each 1 hr before your appt and this will make you very relaxed that some our patients do not even remember the appointment. Hang in there, you will het through this......
Reply:Welcome to the "I hate the dentist and need a ton of fillings" club!

I am so phobic of the dentist, they put me on a high dose of valium before my appointments. My father is the same way.

And, to pour salt into a wound, my insurance company does not cover any anesthesia, and it doesn't cover nitrius oxide (laughing gas).

I had a couple of filings in the past and I honestly don't remember much of the visit, they had doped me up with valium so that I was woozy at the time (they did that because of the insurance not covering the laughing gas and I could not afford the out-of-pocket expense at the time). They do give you a local numbing agent that is injected right into the gum which numbs everything so that you don't feel the drilling, filling, etc. They also numb the gum before they give you the needle so you don't feel that as well. The whole process went very quickly, and I had two fillings done and was in and out in less than an hour, and I haven't had a problem with them since. I also got the composite resin filings, which matches the teeth, so you don't see that ugly metal like with older fillings.

I need filings in all my teeth, and to fix broken ones from nocturnal grinding. There are some dentists who can acutally put you to sleep with anesthesia through an IV and then do all your filings at once. BUT, alot of insurance companies do not cover this procedure (like mine) and it can be very expensive ($2,000) if you have to pay out of pocket. Since I can't go that route, I go once every month or two months, and get a couple done at a time until all are done. This way, it's less stressful on me because of my extreme anxiety over the dentist.

Ask your dentist to see if an anti-anxiety drug (valium, ativan, etc) taken once an hour before your appointment is right for you. The drug wears off in about 2 hours, and just makes you very sleepy and relaxed, enough to get through the phobia part. It saved my sanity.
