Hey guys, hope you can help me out here. I have to go to the dentist tomorrow unfortunately to get 3 fillings.......I'm not happy about it at all!
I've never had any fillings or anything done at the dentist before, I'm 16 years old so I guess I've done alright to get until now before needing fillings, but I'm still upset about it! Anyway, one of the fillings is going to be big......I had a bit of a toothache in that tooth which is why I went to the dentist in the first place. The other two are going to be quite small I think, I think they're between teeth.
What's it like getting fillings? Is it really sore? My mam says it is sore but I don't know if she's joking or not. I think I have to get silver fillings because the white ones are too expensive, do they look really bad in your mouth? And this might be stupid, but do they taste of metal?
Thanks so much guys!
I'm getting fillings for the first time - what's it like?
You will be fine. The worst part is holding your mouth open!
You will have a topical anesthetic placed on the gums to numb up the tissue so you wont feel the actual injection as much. You may feel a pinch, but breathe deeply and focus on that not the injection. After about 5 minutes you will be pretty numb. The dentist will then take a handpiece with a bur and remove the decayed portion of the teeth. Since you will have amalgam, or metal, fillings placed the technique is a bit different than the white fillings. The dentist, or if legal in your state a dental assistant, will fill the hole where the cavity was with the material and carve the anatomy in the softened metal. With silver fillings you shouldnt eat for a few hours to allow the metal to completley harden. It is completly set after 24 hours. The advantage of the metal is that in that time you are biting and your filling actually comforms to the bite better than the white fillings that are light cured and are set at the appointment. Some times you have to go back for a bite adjustment with the white fillings because your bite isnt right and you can have soreness in the area. The silver fillings dont usually have this problem.
Bad thing about the silver fillings is that they are not tooth colored and they are not bonded to the tooth, so over time the margin where the tooth meet the filling will break down and bacteria can leak into the area and cause a recurrent cavity. In any case fillings arent meant to last forever and they will need to be replaced anyways. By that time you can have a white filling placed if you want.
Oh and they dont taste like metal but if you bite onto metal like foil or even a fork, sometimes you will get a bit of a wierd sensation. And dont worry about the mercury in the filling either, there are a lot of people out there that think it will cause all kinds of problems, it is safe.
Good Luck, you will be fine!

Reply:It's really not that bad. The first thing that the dentist will do before he does anything is to give you a shot that numbs your mouth. After that you won't feel a thing. The only really annoying part about it is that your mouth is numb for a few hours after the dentist finishes, so you sound kinda funny and it's really hard to eat and drink. Sometimes the tooth will be a little bit sore afterwards when the anesthetic wears off, but it's rarely that bad.
Probably nobody will notice the filling if it's silver depending on where it is. Most of them aren't that big and they're in the back of your mouth, so unless someone looks in your mouth with a flashlight or something, you probably won't have to worry. And no, they don't taste like metal, or anything else for that matter.
Reply:I does not hurt when you are having them done, just a little uncomfortable holding your mouth open. They will be sensitive to hot or cold for a couple days, but after that they are fine. And no, they dont taste like metal.
Reply:its painless!
Reply:Be careful when eating kitkats as I ate one just after a filling and I did not realise that there was some tinfoil still attached. OWWWWWWWW
Reply:Firstly the dentist wil numb the area with a few injections. These are nowhere near as bad as injections in your arms etc.
It does feel like they have just numbed your ear and top lip..lol.
You will wait for around 15 minutes for the injectoin to work and then the fillings will start. You won't feel anything much, other than your mouth being stretched open and some tugging %26amp; stuff like that.
You can't eat or drink for two hours after %26amp; I have found that a week later, I still can't eat anything on the side of my filling.
If you have a good look in most peoples' mouths, you'll find probably every other person has at least one filling.
They don't taste of metal, but you might be spitting out little chunks of the filling for a few hours if you don't rinse properly (how can you rinse when your mouth is numb?).
Don't work yourself up over it, it's not that bad.
Good luck.
Reply:Don't worry - it's not so bad. You will probably have a little needle in your gum ( you'll hardly feel that) to stop you feeling any pain while the filling's being done. Then there may be some drilling to remove the bad part - it won't hurt, but you'll hear the sound of the drill and may have a little tube in your mouth to stop you drooling all over the place while the work is being done. The dentist will then put the filling in and press it down. Then you will probably be able to rinse out your mouth with the nice pink mouthwash - that's the best bit! The fillings may feel strange for a day or two, but you'll soon get used to them, and hardly anyone will notice them. All in all, it's a lot better than having toothache! Good luck!
Reply:ihad it 2 trust me does not hurt if they r small they will but a shot which hurts a little bit after that they drill a little hole u bearlly feel it next the just fill it in with the stuf but dont touch it or else it wont hurt also dont bite ur cheek cause since it is numb u wont feel it but later u will
but trust me it woulnt hurt
Reply:it depends which tooth is filled and the size of the filling. No two fillings will be alike and depend on the patient as well. my advice is for you to sit there and let the dentist do their job....put your hand up if you want them to stop. The more you move and ask questions will inevitably make it difficult for you and the dentist. Just have 1-2 teeth filled at a time.
(i'm a dentist)
Reply:it depends on how wide you open...they do look like spots and ya they taste like metal...nothing to be scared cuz mine wasnt too bad
