Mercury fillings - bad?

I just found out I need fillings, they said I have holes in 7 teeth so presumably that means 7 fillings.

I'm surprised because I have better oral hygiene now than when I was a kid and I never had that many problems before. (I’m 18 now) I hardly ever eat sweets and I mostly drink water (or beer, which I know has sugar but not as much as a fizzy drinks) so this comes as a bit of a shock. I’m guessing most of the holes are quite small but there were a couple that hurt slightly when prodded with that metal spike they love using.

Anyway I looked at the leaflet in the surgery and saw the fillings have mercury in them. This has got me very worried as it seems to me mercury is a very poisonous metal and the mouth is a good place for poisons to be absorbed into the body. Am I worrying about nothing?

I know white fillings don’t have mercury but I probably can’t afford them and it’s mostly my back teeth anyway so I’m guessing the dentist wouldn’t want to give me them. What do I do?

Mercury fillings - bad?
Yes, mercury fillings are very bad for you. Slowly, the mercury goes right into your system. Dentists usually don't tell you this because they will lose their license.

I had all my fillings replaced to composites a fews years ago. The dental office had a plan that they worked with. I had a year to pay off the bill which included no interest charges whatsoever.
Reply:Yes.
Reply:If your really worried speak with the dentist.

They should be banned...
Reply:the mercury in the fillings won't hurt you. I've never heard of anyone being sick from having them in their mouth. i personally perfer resin (white) fillings because they actually bond to your teeth, and they don't cost that much more than traditional amalgam (silver) fillings. But some insurance comapnies will not cover them if they are in your back teeth. It is also a little harder to put white fillings in back teeth b/c the area needs to be completely dry, which is difficult with the contstant saliva production in the mouth. whichever you choose will be fine.
Reply:No mercury fillings are not bad I did a whole report on it! They also cost much less. But the only thing is is that they are visible and the other fillings are not.
Reply:There is a lot of controversy over the safety of the metal fillings used by dentists. I have them in my own mouth, and I have put them in others. Since many people think it's a giant dental conspiracy, here is a link that talks more about the metal dental filling (called amalgam). If you read through it, you will find that there is NO scientific evidence to support the claim that the mercury in the dental filling causes problems. This filling material has been used for over 100 years. There have been lots of changes in technology over that time (duh!) but obviously this is an excellent filling material for back teeth, or else we wouldn't be using it. The white fillings are more expensive and are not as durable as the metal ones. For cavities in the back of the mouth, I much prefer the metal fillings.

Reply:Im in the process of gradually having all 14 of my mercury fillings removed. After each one my health improves. DONT let them put mercury any where near your mouth-- your health will gradually decline .
