I went to the dentist yesterday and got fillings in 2 of my teeth but today they hurt quite a lot. My jaw feels stiff and the teeth are sore as well. Why do they hurt? I thought getting fillings was supposed to stop them from hurting. Is this normal, or did something go wrong? Should I phone my dentist? I need to go back next week and get fillings in 2 more teeth, but they don't hurt just now and if they're going to hurt once I get fillings in them I'd rather just leave them - if they don't hurt do they really need fillings??
Why do my fillings hurt?
Hey honey, I'm in the same position, except I got 4 fillings all at once! Your jaw will just be stiff because you had to hold it open for a while when the dentist was working on you teeth, so don't worry about that, it will probably be better by tomorrow. The teeth should feel a bit better by tomorrow as well, they should gradualy just get better. You could try rinsing with warm salt water, that might help a bit with the pain. It's normal to have some sensitivity and pain after fillings, especially if they were deep. If your teeth were sore before you got the fillings then the cavities were probably quite deep.
In answer to the second part of your question, yes, even if the other two teeth with cavities don't hurt now, you still need to get fillings. The good news is, if they're small cavities, which they probably are if they don't hurt, the fillings shouldn't hurt when they're done because they'll be shallow. If you don't go back for the fillings, the cavities will just get worse, and then the fillings will hurt like the ones you had yesterday in the big cavities.
Reply:Phone ur dentist.
Reply:You jaw probably feels stiff because the dentist was working in your mouth and you had to keep your mouth open for a while.
Your fillings shouldnt "hurt", it may feel uncomfortable for a few days because the teeth were being worked on. Try taking a tylenol and if it starts hurting worse, consult your dentist.
Good luck
Reply:if you had large deep feelings yes they can be touchy for a few days, if it continues they maybe too close to the nerve and you may need a root canal
Reply:It is quite normal to have some pain and sensitivity after having fillings, especially if they were fairly large. They should steadily get better instead of worse. Go ahead and take a Tylenol or Advil to ease the pain. If they are still hurting when you see your dentist next week, have him check them. If you develop any swelling, fever, or if they get worse, call your dentist before the next week's appointment. Always consult your dentist for the best advice concerning your dental health.
Reply:It's quite normal, but if it gets worse or doesn't go away within a few days you should call your dentist back as you might need more extensive treatment (called a root canal) done on your teeth if the cavities were very bad. You really should get the other cavities filled as well, even if they don't hurt right now, the cavities are still there and they will just get worse if you don't get them fixed now.
