Are metal fillings bad for you?

Does the mercury have any adverse effects? What about non-metallic fillings? Gold?

If you have a sensitivity to the metals in the fillings they can cause things like headaches, joint pain, sores in the mouth. Rare but not unheard of is depression, paranoia, fibromyalgia, among other things. Usually these symptoms will appear within days of having the filling placed. There is no proof of birth defects or any life threatening problems related to dental fillings but then again there's no proof that there's not. I have silver fillings and I'm a dental assistant who handles the stuff on a daily basis. We have to use special protocols to avoid over exposure and environmental contamination due to the mercury in the material. There is mercury all over the environment and there's no way to avoid running into it in daily life.


Gold doesn't seem to have any ill effects, true it's expensive. Talk to your dentist and have your silver fillings replaced if you're uncomfortable with them. I know patients who swear they feel 100% better after replacing them. I'm keeping mine though.
Reply:I have metal fillings but I dont think they are made of lead. There is a small amount of mercury in the stuff but its not harmful.
Reply:Yes, they're bad. Get an alternative. Gold's cool but expensive. Ask your dentist.
Reply:If you have older fillings they need to be removed. Mercury can disrupt pregnancies, cause brain damage to unborn fetuses, etc.
Reply:Go to your seach bar and type in "alternative to amalgam fillings" and read through the listed sites. There is alot of information about "silver" fillings. I had all of mine replaced with porcelain. I can't say that it makes me feel any different but I am at peace knowing I am doing something to protect my health.
Reply:The amount and type of mercury in amalgam fillings will have no effect on you.


Many of the so-called symptoms of mercury poisoning put up at sites like this (headaches, joint pain, depression, ...) are NOT symptoms or mercury poisoning.


Change them if like for reasons of aesthetics, but not for spurious quasi-scientific claptrap.
