Are silver fillings better than white??

i know white are very sensitive, more sensitive then silver, and black fillings are just not good at all.. so being that white looks alot nicer doenst mean that white is better than silver... which is better to have white or silver??

Are silver fillings better than white??
It's a matter of personal preference. Silver is cheaper than white but white is not noticeable. Some insurance will not cover white because of the cost.
Reply:Tooth Coloured.

They take a lot less drilling of the tooth.

They have fluoride in them.

Look nicer.

Reply:Silver fillings are the best. Never had a problem with them.
Reply:White fillings! My 4 silver fillings came off exactly 2 years after I got them and they came off on the same week. I got white fillings and have had them for 6 years. My white fillings aren't as sensitive as my silver ones. I couldn't eat candy, ice cream, or chew on aluminum with my silver fillings, I can with my white fillings. Plus the silver fillings look horrible.
Reply:Each has its own advantages. Resin (white composite) fillings have improved to the point that for small to moderate-sized fillings both work very well. For larger fillings, and esp. fillings under the gumline, it is very hard to get a good sealed margin, and some of the mechanical problems of resin (polymerization shrinkage mostly) make amalgam better in some of these applications, esp. in areas where its largest disadvantage (esthetic) are outweighed by its advantages (superior wear properties, compressive strength and dimensional stability)--IOW, the larger the fillings and the further back in the mouth, the more likely I personally lean toward amalgam.

There are many dentists whose judgment I respect that disagree with my opinion, so if you've got a good dentist, listen!

Reply:While the 'white' fillings are more 'natural', the 'silver' fillings are stronger....and the 'white' ones are more expensive than the 'silver' ones....

You won't be getting 'silver' fillings on your front teeth, or even on back teeth where it will be noticed, you'll get the 'white' ones... but if you need a filling on the 'chewing surface' of your back teeth, the 'silver' ones will hold up better and have a higher crushing strength....

'White' fillings= composite

'Silver' fillings= amalgam

Chewing surface= occlusal

Front teeth= anterior

Back teeth=posterior

~just some terms you might be interested in.

Reply:If I were you I would definately try to go with the white, not only do they look better but they are somewhat safer. The silver have mercury in them, the FDA says that it is a miniscule amount, but they say a lot of stuff. Better safe than sorry.
