Scared about getting fillings?

I have to go to the dentist pretty soon and I haven't been in years and I'm sure at least three of my teeth have cavities in them - they hurt when I eat sweets and drink cold water.

I've never had any fillings or anything before and I'm really scared about it, but I feel pretty stupid because I'm 16 years old. My brother says it hurts quite a lot, but I don't know if he's just trying to scare me! (I hope he is)

What exacly happens when you get a filling? And how long does it take?

Scared about getting fillings?
I just wanted to mention that you should close your eyes if your dentist uses a needle to numb the area around the tooth s/he will fill. When s/he numbs it, it will pinch, but that is it.

If you can feel anything, during the drilling, you shoould tell your dentist so that s/he will renumb the area. I've never had to ask a dentist to do this.

It's not that bad. The noise might be a little weird, but that's it.

Be brave and try not to worry about it too much.
Reply:They numb your mouth and drill a hole into your tooth. Honestly, you don't feel anything. You only 'hear' the drilling, but you can't see it or feel it. Be brave! =)
Reply:It really doesnt hurt. Your mouth might be a little sore but its usually gone by the next day.
Reply:better a few minutes of potential pain than hours and hours of long term pain when the cavities get worst.

I know.
Reply:i had fillings put in when i was eight and you don't feel any thing.
Reply:it doesnt hurt.it just feels weird when theyre done because your mouth will be all numb!
Reply:Well they will give you laughing gas or give you shots to numb it but they spray a mist of water when they are doing it so all you feel is the water hitting ur mouth
Reply:Well, I am 30 years old and never had a cavity but I understand they are painful. My old roommate is a dental assistant and she tells me some horror stories. Depending on how far down the cavity goes. If it is deep than it will be painful but they will numb your gums. That is all I know. Good Luck!
Reply:All they do is they put this numming medicine in your mouth and then they drill out the cavity and then fill it, nothing to worry about after i have had 2 root cananls.
Reply:I'd rather deliver a baby than get a filling! That said, tooth decay only gets worse, fix those cavities before they turn into something major. I was in the same situation and the hygeinist and dentist were extra nice to me because they could tell I had a lot of anxiety about being there. good luck!
Reply:If the cavity is superficial, it will hurt the most because the doctor will pass by the enamel.Usualyy, this kind of procedures take place under anesthetics, so u won't filll actuallyu anything.

If it hurts when u eat sweets, there is a probability(wich will put the diagnosis toghether with the Rx) that u're pulp must be extracted, wich again is done under anestethics.

i don't think u should be afraid because there are a lot of modern tehniques and new equipment that alouds u to feel even confortable at the dentist.
Reply:the worst part is the shot to numb it. after that, you don't feel a thing.
