Silver crowns and fillings?

I have tons of silver fillings and some are not even three years old, and about two and a half years ago, I got a silver crown. I'm getting a new one soon, can I ask for a white one? How much extra will it be? My mom said it might come out of pocket b/c it's counted as cosmetic. True?

Silver crowns and fillings?
No, that is not true. Get a white crown. It may cost a little more, but it'll be worth it. You need to think about your future and how you look - a mouth full of metal looks ghetto and unattractive.
Reply:its really not that much more expensive. ask the dentist when you go in, and if your mom says its too much then just go witht he silver. its really not that bad. but if youre really worried about the way it will look, then offer to pay the difference with your mom.
Reply:Sometimes it's dentists prerogative, they choose what will work best based on the position of the cavity, such as the cavity is where two teeth meet, or on the face of a tooth where there is no friction. Recently my dentist has started doing fillings in white though.
Reply:insurance plans cover it all differently. you need to research what your plan covers. some will only cover white fillings/crowns on first 6 front teeth (top or bottom). Some cover them the same where ever they are in your mouth.
Reply:Dentists don't recommend getting silver fillings anymore because there is mercury in the filling. I'm 90% sure porcelain will not cost more, they may even cost less.
Reply:Way back when-in the 70's and 80's- silver was used all the time. I have one from when I was young, but the most recent ones are white. In Las Vegas, NV the dentist here-in the 90's-gave me a choice, but now I don't think they do.

Depending on your insurance it may cost you more to go with the white filling. Some insurances do consider the white cosmetic and won't cover the cost-that means you have to.

I would suggest that you call your insurance and the dentist to see approximately how much extra the white would cost. If you pay up front and not a payment plan then the dentist may give you a discount.
Reply:The white is almost always used when it's your front teeth at no extra charge. However, it is labelled as cosmetic when it's a tooth further back in your mouth. My dentist explained this to me when I had mine done. Sometimes they have to order in the white, but I would say it's definitely worth paying a bit extra. I think for my fillings it was about a 50 dollar difference in total for two.
Reply:you're probably getting silver crowns because you're too young for porcelain over metal crowns. If you're under 18 a doctor will choose metal because you still have some gorwing to do, in a couple years that crown won't really fit anymore and rather than make you waste another $600 to $2000 on a new porcelain crown he just giving you something to get by with. Keep going to your regular visits and when you're anywhere from 18- 21 ( sometimes as early as 16) is a good idea to get the porcelain crown. Every dentist I have worked for will do a white crown in the back and color match so it's really just a matter of age.

as far as the fillings go, depending on what state you live in Insurance will usually not cover white fillings in the back (Claifornia is one of the only one I can think of that will). Insurance companys feel silver is just as good and will go with whatever is cheaper. You can ask for white fillings but you'll have to pay alot more
