How often do fillings fall out during root scaling?

Hi everyone. I had root scaling done last Monday on 1 half of my mouth. The hygenist accidentally knocked out a filling....Now I'm nervous about the getting the second half done. I have 4 fillings on that side. I'm scheduled to go in tomorrow, but now I'm nervous. I know I HAVE to..and I am...I was just wondering how often this happens? Was it just a fluke? Thanks to anyone who can help!!!

How often do fillings fall out during root scaling?
Usually fillings don't fall out during a scaling or root planning, but when they do, its because they are loose, had micro-leakage or undermined with decay. In most cases they are old fillings that have been leaking causing decay to develop under the restoration. A good restoration won't fall or be scraped out, they must be drilled out. Don't be worried about continuing with your next appointment, it shouldn't happen again.
Reply:If a filling comes out that easily then it was on its way to falling out. Count it as a blessing in disquise. Fillings don't last forever. They do need to be replaced in due time.
Reply:not a fluke:) sometimes if a filling has been "leaking" awhile then scaling(either hand or electric) will dislodge it. which means it needed to be replaced anyway.
Reply:Very rarely, I have done over 1000 scalings and never pulled out a single filling but again I know people that have. I have pulled out a filling before just doing a simple cleaning. There are many reasons why fillings will come off...too old, overhanging margins of the filling, or it could have been just an accident. Most likely you will be fine.
