Fillings in front teeth?

Turns out I need a couple of fillings in my front teeth, in between the middle two on the top and then to one side of that as well.

How do they do fillings on front teeth? Does it hurt more than fillings in your back teeth? And will you be able to see the fillings once they're done?

For some reason, getting fillings in my back teeth doesn't bother me at all, I've had a few and need another few and I'm not fussed about that, but getting fillings in my front teeth really freaks me out!!!

Also, once you have the fillings, can they fall out? I'm going to be really paranoid about biting into stuff incase they do!

Fillings in front teeth?
First off the fillings that are done on front teeth are done in about the same manner as ones done on the back teeth. Sometimes they can even be done without anesthetic, but this is something to ask your dentist about at the appointment (if he or she thinks you should be numbed up just do it!).

All fillings done on the front teeth are done with a resin composite material that has really gotten better in the last few years. There are many different shades of the material so it can perfectly match your natural tooth. If you can not see where the cavities are in your teeth then you probably wont see the fillings either ( a lot of times they can be done from the lingual-tongue side- of the tooth so you cant see it.)

Over time, though the fillings do break down around the margins where the tooth meets the filling and you can develop stain around this area. That is furthered along if you have bad habits like smoking, drinking a lot of staining drinks, ect.

The fillings in your front teeth have no more of a chance of falling out than the ones in your back teeth. If they are on the edge of the tooth, on the edge you bite with , you should be careful and not bite into hard objects to protect them.

The nice thing about the white filling material is that it is actually bonded to the tooth, the older style metal or amalgam fillings just filled a hole, so the margins leaked a lot easier.

There is an art to placing composite fillings though, and like any art there will be some that do it better than another. In any case, your dentist should only want you to be happy and healthy so if anything bothers you let him or her know!
Reply:They will use the white filling stuff for your front teeth. Don't worry, they won't fall out. Dentists know what they are doing, and they would never purposely ruin the appearance of your smile.
Reply:it does not look wrong i dont no if it hearts
Reply:I had small chip fixed once and it's not even noticeable and I eat all kinds of stuff. Still there. Make sure that it's colored to your teeth's color.
Reply:my mom had a filling in the front which was noticeable but that was in the 80's. when i was in junior high, dentists started using white stuff for fillings which is much less noticeable. maybe you should see if that is an option for your situation.

just a warning that a white filling is still going to be noticeable, but will definitely be better than a black one, no?
Reply:umm

well they do kinda show a lil bit

I saw a kid with filling sin his front teeth

put jelly on them and ull kinda get the idea...

Its kind of pathetic that you daont care about your dental health care

but in 5 years...

hahaha, ull find out
Reply:u wont no they r there

or any 1 else

iv had it done

RELAX
Reply:they shouldn't bother you. Most likely the dentist will use a white filling if they are going to show. That's what happened with my daughter.

Don't be concerned, I've had fillings for 35 years and haven't had any fall out. It may happen, but don't worry about it. Ask your dentist what to do, if it should happen.
Reply:well yeah i would imagine tht it hurts worse than the gettin the backs done....... i dont know how they do front teeth never had them done before........ but yes if your not careful with the fillings they could fall out and that really sucks cuz then u have to go and get them refilled and after the fillings fall out it hurts like crazy!!!!............
Reply:They have front tooth fillings done with a photosensitive composite material.

Its not the mercury amalgam that you're used to. No worse than getting a molar filled. My have last for years.
Reply:last month I had to have a tooth rebuilt in the front of my mouth. I was very concerned about the same things you are. My dentist reassured me it was like any other filling, it would be strongly bonded for biting, and the coloring of the filling itself would be matched to my other teeth. Well, still uncertain, I went. WOW! They matched the color perfectly! the shape and structure matched the original tooth that had broken and the freezing was the same as any other filling! My jaw was a little sore for the next two days, but that was because of the work needed. Don't worry hon, I now eat carrots, apples, etc and I enjoy them!
Reply:I am not an expert, but my sister had to have her top front tooth rebuilt. They drilled a small hole into the back of the tooth and filled it in with a porcelain or natural looking filling. She didn't seem to be bothered by it. She has never lost it, but they check its grip at every check up just to be sure. It has even taken on the staining of her real teeth and looks very natural.
Reply:I have had them done. It is not so bad. They match the filling 'stuff' to your teeth so it does not look obvious, it is hard to tell just by looking at it. I thought it would be weird too but it was no big deal at all. They have done well so I don't think that you should worry about them falling out. Mine are doing fine and I can eat (bite into food) just as well as I ever could.
Reply:I've had a couple on the front and they didn't even need novacain.

They've been in for years and I have had no problem with them falling out. They use a tooth colored compound instead of silver and mine matches so well I can't even remember which ones had fillings.
Reply:they usually use white material for front fillings,

so they shouldn't be all that noticeable

but they don't always attach as securely as

metal fillings in back teeth

I had a front filling that fell out after less

than 6 weeks .......

dentist repaired for no additional price,

but she told me she would only guarantee

it would hold for 6 months
Reply:fillings on front teeth don`t hurt any more than anywhere else., Yes you can see the fillings once they are done, but you have to know what you`re looking for, they are not silver, they are colored white to look as natural as possible. My husband had those same front teeth done about 2 years ago, and he does`nt have any problems with biting or anything. My advice? go ahead and get it done, you`re cavities will only get bigger with time, and it looks way better.
Reply:dont worry about it i am terrified of the dentist and have had abcesses that were so sore that i had to go because the pain was so unbearible that was so scarey because my mouth was already in agony i was affraid the dentist would touch a nerv and make it worse. but i went and it was woth it , im still nervous but not as bad i just hate the numbness after an injection . you will wonder what all the fuss was about when its done and it needs done so get it over with. big smiles!
Reply:Okay...I've had one huge filling in my front tooth since I was in Jr high and I'm in my 40s now.

It was going very well but recently it developed a large crack...so the decision was made to upgrade to a crown.

I did have to have it redone from time to time...every 8-10 years.

It did not hurt more than getting the back teeth done.

Any filling can fall out...as a matter of fact I had one of the filings in my back tooth fall out last week.

A good dentist should be able to match the color very well. The good thing is the filling will stain just like your real teeth so they will "Stain equally together".

Crowns on the other hand do not stain. So before I got my crown I whitened my teeth and now when my teeth start to stain it makes my crown stand out a bit so I use my whitener to lighten them to match the crown again.

Personally I would go with the filling over the crown for as long as possible. The only reason I went with the crown was that everytime they rebuilt my tooth with the filling material it they had to grind down a bit of the tooth and after almost 30 years it was getting to thin to keep doing that.

You may wonder why I had to have this done...well it is like this.

My brother and I had a fight...mushy muddy spring snowballs were involved. I tackled him and had him on the ground face in the mud trying to force him to eat a handful of spring grass when he brought his head back ...it hit my chin...my bottom teeth hit my upper ones and wham I lost the bottom half of one of my beautiful front teeth.

My father was heartbroken. But I survived found a great man and got married anyway!

Alls well that ends well!
Reply:It all depends on the extent of your decay. If not bad they won't have to numb they can clean out the decay w/ air abrasion %26amp; do the filling w/ composite that matches your teeth. I've had several of these done %26amp; no pain...even had a chip fixed in the front where I'm a bruxer.

P.S. I'm a Dental Technician...I make Crown %26amp; Bridge for the Dentist's.
Reply:Get white ones.
Reply:I had fillings in the front teeth and in between two teeth. Their matched to the same color of my teeth and was done very nicely, you cant even tell I have fillings. I had a topical numbing agent so no needles and I thought this proceedure was easier than in the back molors. no worries, just worrie about what your teeth are going to look and feel like if you dont have this done. I've never had problems with my front feeling, biting, chewing on gum, but back filling I've lost chewing gum before.( I chew alot of gum.) No problem.
Reply:Don't worry. It is easier for the Dentist to do fllings on the front teeth, as they are easier to see.

He will use a white substance to fill your teeth so it won't notice. It is very hard and you will be able to eat whatever you like.

The modern fillings are much less likely to fall out.

If you use dental floss it really cuts down on the number of fillings you have in the future. Good luck!!
Reply:No it doesn't hurt anymore than filling in the back teeth. You shouldn't be able to see them if the Dentist matches the filling colour to your teeth. I would be more worried if I were you about what caused these cavities in the first place otherwise you are going to end up with more!!!!
Reply:The worst bit is that your nose goes numb! Which feels horrible!
