I have to get fillings tomorrow :( how much do they hurt?

I'm really quite worried because I've never had fillings before (which in fifteen years is pretty good - but I drink way too much diet coke). I have to get two tomorrow, at the back I think, and my dad - who's had quite a lot - says it's the injection that hurts. But how MUCH does it hurt? I had a BCG(?) jab recently and I expected it to hurt more, but it wasn't that bad (it was in my upper arm). I've got pretty long nails so I've been poking my gums (yes, I know it's not a good idea) to see how much it would hurt - is it the same sort of feeling? And if I have to have two fillings, will they do an injection each side or just the one, and whereabouts?

One injection each side.

If you are really worried, ask the dentist to rub a topical anaesthetic on your gum first. This is a gel which stops you feeling the injection.
Reply:Won't hurt. don't worry. The dentist puts a kind of gel on the gum, and it numbs it somewhat. Then they put the needle in and give you the 'real' anasthetic. Numbs up in about 10 mins or less.

Don't worry, you'll be fine...
Reply:It doesnt hurt at all, They make your gums numb before they stick the needle in you.
Reply:dont worry, i've had about 12 fillings and i was addicted to diet coke aswell. It doesnt hurt at all!. The most painful thing is the numbing injection they put in your gum, but that lasts for about 2 seconds. You'll be fine, while they do you actually start to enjoy yourself from the whole experience and dont feel a thing. Good Luck!
Reply:The pain is not a dull pain like your nails - it is a little bit of a stinging pain that hurts the most when he is pulling the needle OUT rather than sticking it in...

The pain of that will last approximately 5-10 seconds...take a good breath before he/she does it...

For two fillings, they will prob only stick you once...

Try going in for four fillings one day and five the next...my mouth looked right PURTY when I came out...I couldn't even talk...(whoops - sorry, we're trying to make you feel better...)

You will be fine...don't freak out - it will hurt more...
Reply:the worse part about going to the dentist is the intial shot of novacaine they give you. the rest is a breeze :) i have had a ton of work on my teeth and that has always been the worse for me. Thank God for the novacaine!! I'd rather feel pain from that then a cavity!! The pain is enough to make your eyes water a little. any needle going anywhere in your body will hurt. But, think about what you are not going to feel :)
Reply:it doesnt hurt really and it goes really numb afterwards. its not painless but it is uncomfortable.

good luck
Reply:it doesnt hurt at all, the injection is not painful either, u barely feel a thing. and yes it is the same sort of feeling as poking your gums. if u get the laughing gas u really wont feel a thing, u might actually enjoy it
Reply:They don't hurt. The needle going in is uncomfortable more than painful - the drilling, padding, etc just feels a bit strange.
Reply:i just take a big breath in before the stick me and do a long slow loutbreath while they inject. The first one on each side is the worst. After that, no big deal at all. They will also probably use a topical to numb your gum before the shot. i smell the medicine as it hits my blood stream and that is way worse than the pain.

My mouth waking up hurts worse than anything. it makes my nose hurt for some reason. That and i spend an hour thumping it while it's numb for entertainment.

Good luck
Reply:The injection won't hurt half as much as the cost.
Reply:I had 23 fillings, and four teeth pulled in one sitting. :)

It depends on where the nerve for the tooth runs, as to how bad the injection is.

Rear molars sometimes require a shot into the jaw hinge, and upper teeth occasionally require the bolus to be put in the roof of the mouth. Those can be kinda stingy.

But either way.. it's only the novacaine/lidocaine/whatever that hurts, and a _good_ dentist will make that painless as well.

One thing.. once you have the numbing agent in, and they let it set up, you shouldn't feel pain. you might feel pressure, and vibration, but not _pain_. If you _do_ feel pain, tell them immediately so you can A) wait a bit longer for the nerve to freeze, or B) get more pain killer.

Having a live nerve drilled is serious nail-in-the-jaw pain, for most people, though some seem not to notice it at all.
Reply:I have had 3 fillings

it does hurt when they inject- after that its fine

it doesnt last long though as others have said- and theres worse pains in the world, like cramp!!

it isnt like sticking your nails into your gums, it sort of sometimes feels like the needle is going quite deep, so its quite a strange feeling, but dont worry about it
Reply:honestly it doesent hurt all u feel is a little jab and the pains away
Reply:If the tooth is on the bottom you will get one shot that will block the pain to that half of your jaw so if there are two teeth on the same side of the bottom it would be one shot. One on each side of the bottom, two shots. On top it's different but still, it's better when they're in back as yours our.

As everyone else has said, they'll numb the gum with lidocaine gel and then the injection is not painless but it's not horrible either.

Once you get the shot you won't feel a thing. And yes, if your dentist uses nitrous oxide (laughing gas) you won't care about anything :). If you get carsick let the dentist know because the laughing gas may make you sick to your stomach.

Remember to breath, sometimes the tendency is to hold your breath but try to keep your breathing nice and even and MOST IMPORTANT, make sure you don't bite yourself while you're numb. You can do some real damage to yourself if you chew on your tongue or cheek while it's anesthetized. It will probably take an hour or two for the numbness to wear off.

Relax, it's a breeze.
Reply:ask for gas.
Reply:if u will be my girlfriend i wont hurt your fellings
